New Listmessenger Bug Tracking System Available

KINGSTON, On., Sunday, December 6th, 2009 - We have just integrated a new bug tracking system directly into the ListMessenger forum. We will be using this system to track all confirmed bugs in both ListMessenger Light and Pro, as well as provide solutions to many of these issues in between releases.

The bug tracking system can be accessed by clicking the Bug Tracker link at the top of the forum, then heading into the appropriate project.

We have been using an issue tracker internally for a long time, but this system was never available to the public. We hope that by providing this new method of tracking issues, ListMessenger users will benefit by having quick and easy access to solutions for known issues in the application.

Listmessenger Forum Upgraded

KINGSTON, On., Saturday, November 28th, 2009 - The ListMessenger support forums have just been upgraded to the latest version of the forum software we use. All of the functionality of the forum appears to be working without a problem; however, the design has definitely changed and we were unable to port our usual forum look and feel to the new version of our forum software.

Over the next short while we will be updating the look and feel of our forums to match the new website we hope to release before the year is out. We fully recognize that the forums currently feel very "stock" right now, but please be patient until we are finished bringing a more "ListMessenger" feel to the forum.

Until then, enjoy the new forum features.

KINGSTON, On., Monday, December 8th, 2008 - To address some minor issues in the initial ListMessenger 2.2 release I have released an updated build of both ListMessenger Light & Pro. ListMessenger Pro can be downloaded from the "My Downloads" section of the ListMessenger Members Area, and ListMessenger Light can be downloaded from the "Downloads" section of the website.

This update resolves the following issues:

Upgraded TinyMCE to version 3.2.1.1.

PRO ONLY: Upgraded MCImageManager plugin to version 3.1.0.5 (resolves 4371).

New option to run TinyMCE in Basic mode, which has limited CSS use for Outlook 2007, or Advanced mode, which creates valid CSS (resolves 4361).

New option to use PHP's mail() function in Basic mode, which does not set the Return-Path or Advanced mode, which does set the Return-Path using the 5th parameter (resolves 4364).

Replaced TabPane library with the jQuery UI Tabs interface (resolves 4347).

Minor variable name change when someone attempts to subscribe to a group they already reside in through the end-user tools.

There are no database changes in this release. To upgrade simply upload the files from the latest build over top of your existing ListMessenger files on your web-server (accept for includes/config.inc.php), and you're good to go.

Please consult the full documentation in the docs directory prior to upgrading, and please do not forget to make a backup of your ListMessenger database before you start.

Listmessenger Pro 2.2.0 Release Candidate Available

KINGSTON, On., Sunday, July 13th, 2008 - I am pleased to announce the availability of the first and only public release candidate of ListMessenger Pro 2.2.0, which is now available for download to users who have previously purchased a licence of ListMessenger Pro. You can download ListMessenger Pro 2.2.0 RC1 by logging into the ListMessenger Members Area, and clicking the "My Downloads" link on the right.

It should be noted that this is a release candidate, meaning that I do not consider it stable for production environments just yet, although your help with testing it is greatly appreciated.

I am happy to remind you that all upgrades for ListMessenger Pro are free.

ListMessenger 2.2 introduces several new features, and enhances overall long term stability by preparing for the future of PHP (PHP6) and continuing to support legacy PHP (PHP4).

The key highlights for ListMessenger 2.2 include:

New Rich Text Editor
We have had long standing issues with various rich text editors through ListMessenger's history, and we are delighted to announce we have moved to TinyMCE 3.1.0.1 and the MCImageManager plug-in. This rich text editor is incredibly flexible, and supports all major web-browsers including Safari.

Send to Subscriber
The old Send To Address testing message function in the Message Centre has always presented some confusion, so we have re-purposed it into "Send to Subscriber". It is now a find-as-you-type drop down box that allows you to send the specified message to that single subscriber, custom fields and all.

Custom Field Search
An often requested feature was the ability to search for specific data from within custom fields, so here it is! So if you want to see a list of subscribers whose favourite colour is blue, go right ahead and search for it.

Basic Subscriber Statistics
We have brought into the interface some basic statistics on your subscribers. You can now see month-by-month, and day-by-day how many people have subscribed and unsubscribed for your ListMessenger groups.

Forward To A Friend
You asked for it, and you got it. You can now add a [forwardurl] variable to your messages, which will give your subscribers a formatted link that allows them to forward the message they received to one of their friends, with the option of allowing the friend to subscribe to the group as well.

Multi-part Forms
In some circumstances you may want to collect additional information from your subscribers, but you don't want to take up extra screen real estate to do it. With ListMessenger 2.2, you can have your subscribers fill out this additional information on "page 2" of the form.

Interface Improvements
Lets face it ListMessenger has never been an ugly duckling, but we can always find ways to make it look even better. This release has some nice touches, you'll see.

Listmessenger Development Update

KINGSTON, On., Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 - I have had some questions relating to ListMessenger development and the next release, so I thought I should write an announcement outlining the current development status.

Generally speaking I aim to put out 1 or 2 releases per year; however, it has been nearly 13 months since the 2.1 release. Just to be clear, ListMessenger is still being developed and activity has been slow but steady. This past year has been great, we have thousands of new users and have received a lot of fantastic constructive criticism that helps drive new development and has helped make ListMessenger what it is today.

There are actually two versions of ListMessenger currently in development:

ListMessenger 2.2
This release will be out shortly and consists of many updates, bug fixes, and some new and enhanced features such as:

New default rich text editor (TinyMCE 3.0.5 with MCImageManager plugin).

New ability to search for data in your custom fields.

New advanced SMTP connections (including SSL connection and port specifications).

New automated "Send To Friend" link and form support.

Repurposed the "Send To Address" feature in the Message Centre to "Send To Subscriber" so that you are able to send the message to single existing subscriber (a la find-as-you-type).

New template variable added to the End-user Tools for multiple template support.

New ability to use custom field data in Admin notification e-mails.

Plus a few other tricks.

There is no specific release date for ListMessenger 2.2; however, it will be out sooner rather than later. Development is nearly complete, then testing and Q/A will follow. ListMessenger 2.2 will be the last release in the 2.x branch and will also be the last release of ListMessenger to support PHP4.

ListMessenger 3.0
Planning and initial development work of ListMessenger 3.0 has already began, and I am excited to be able to devote more time to this release once 2.2 is out-the-door. ListMessenger 3.0 is a complete rewrite of the code base, and currently utilizes Zend Framework 1.5. I do not want to divulge too much information on it at this time, but I am truly hoping to make it available by the end of the year.

I hope that this announcement satisfies your curiosity. If not, please feel free to post a message on the forum and I will do my best to answer it.

Best Regards,

KINGSTON, On., Sunday, March 25th, 2007 - As with every release of ListMessenger, I am very pleased to announce the immediate availability of ListMessenger Pro 2.1 and ListMessenger Light 2.1.
ListMessenger Pro users can download the upgrade from the "My Downloads" section of the ListMessenger Members Area and ListMessenger Light users can download the upgrade from the Downloads section on the main page of the site.

If you are upgrading from previous versions of ListMessenger, do not worry, you are not left out; the setup application can upgrade right from ListMessenger 0.5.0 to 2.1.0.

Main Changes in ListMessenger 2.1:
New Features:

CAPTCHA image protection for End-User Tools (requires GD Image Library with Freetype 2).

New RSS syndication for mailing list archive (in archive.php).

New post subscribe / unsubscribe message auto-reply option.

End-Users can now update their subscriber information (in profile.php).

Subscribers firstname and lastname have been added to administrator notifications.

New [messageid] and [profileurl] variables added to message and template composition.

New bulk removal tool for removing multiple e-mail addresses at once.

New copy / move subscribers option added so you can manage subscribers more easily.

Administrators can now remove selected messages from the Queue Manager individually.

Updates & Refinements:

ListMessenger interface refinements including new scaling width and height.

Manage Groups section displays the number of subscribers in each individual group.

Increased speed of list exports on large mailing lists.

InnovaStudio 2.9.8 Upgrade

And many more... Please see the Listmessenger 2.1 Change Log for the full changelog.

Future Changes:
The ListMessenger 2.x code base is now fairly mature and we need room to grow! So with that we will soon be starting development on ListMessenger 3.0. If you have any last pieces of feedback or suggestions for the 3.0 release, please post them in the Suggestions & Feedback section as I this will be reviewed while we develop our Roadmap to 3.0.

The other exciting piece of news is that listmessenger.com will soon be getting a facelift! Our current website and members area has served us quite well, but it's starting to age. The new site design (currently in development) will bring us up to Web 2.0 standards and the new purchasing system will allow for more flexibility including add-on purchases and alternate payment methods.

We will be posting more details as soon as we can.

Best Regards,

KINGSTON, On., Tuesday, May 17th, 2005 - Today marks the end of long development cycle and out of that development cycle we are delighted to present you with ListMessenger Pro 2.0, our next generation electronic mailing list management system. This new version of ListMessenger encompasses an inordinate number of feature requests provided by our customer base and will provide a stable and solid foundation for future releases of both our Light and Professional versions of our product.

Full details of the changes within ListMessenger Pro can be found in the changelog.txt file available on our website; however, the following is a list of major enhancements to the program:

Complete rewrite of ListMessenger 1.0 codebase.

Custom e-mail fields support.

E-Mail attachements and managment support.

Subscriber importing and exporting system.

Enhanced backup and restore system.

Unlimited group levels.

Select and send to multiple groups at once.

Duplicate e-mail address removal.

Subscribe and unsubscribe notifications.

New language files and language choice options.

HTMLArea 3.0 rich text editor for Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape and Internet Explorer.

Enhanced message archives.

Moveable public and private folders.

Upgrade from all previous releases of ListMessenger.

Fantastic User Guide (Manual) by Erik Geurts. *available shortly

Optional error logging.

No more pop-up window to send messages.

New custom ListMessenger icon set.

Much more.

Over the next week, we will be spending a lot of time upgrading the ListMessenger website to reflect the changes of ListMessenger, so we apologize that some of the information and demo is currently out of date.

For those of you interested in ListMessenger Light 2.0 news, we plan on releasing ListMessenger Light 2.0 in the coming weeks. This new release of ListMessenger Light will have many of the benefits of ListMessenger Pro with the usual limitations on the number of subscribers you're able to handle, without the Backup & Restore and Import & Export tools, etc. More information on this will be available shortly.

You have also probably already noticed that we have updated our ListMessenger Forums with forums specific to ListMessenger 1.0 and ListMessenger 2.0. We will continue to support ListMessenger 1.0 users in the coming months with the understanding that our goal is migration from 1.0 to 2.0.

Thank-you for reading our ListMessenger announcements and we look forward to hearing your suggestions and feedback about our new release.

Listmessenger Pro 2.0 Hits The Streets, Tuesday!

KINGSTON, On., Sunday, May 15th, 2005 - ListMessenger Pro 2.0 hits the streets on Tuesday, May 17th, 2005. Yes, I said ListMessenger Pro 2.0 and yes, I said Tuesday, May 17th, 2005 and I delighted to be making this announcement.

After over a year an a half in development and a full version number increase I am pleased to announce ListMessenger Pro 2.0 which will be available on Tuesday, May 17th, 2005. ListMessenger 1.1 never did do this release justice and I've known that for months now, but wanted to make it a surprise for all ListMessenger users.

I realize that I have said this release will be released in the past; however, I can assure you that you will have it this Tuesday. The reason being... that it's already done. Yes, I have the distribution file on my desktop now and it's just about ready to go. We have some small house cleaning to take care of before we can release it which is why it won't be available until Tuesday.

Here are a few of the many new major features:
- Complete rewrite of ListMessenger 1.0 codebase.
- Custom e-mail fields support.
- E-Mail attachements and managment support.
- Subscriber importing and exporting system.
- Enhanced backup and restore system.
- Unlimited group levels.
- Select and send to multiple groups at once.
- Subscribe and unsubscribe notificiations.
- HTMLArea 3.0 rich text editor for Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape and Internet Explorer.
- Enhanced message archives.
- Moveable public and private folders.
- Upgrade from all previous releases of ListMessenger.
- Fantastic User Guide (Manual) by Erik Geurts.
- Error logging.
- No more pop-up window during sending.
- New icon set.
- Much more.

More details will follow in the next 24 hours as we upgrade our website and Members Area to reflect the new release. One other thing I wanted to mention was ListMesseger Light 2.0 will be on it's way shortly as well. After I get ListMessenger Pro released, it's just a matter of making some code adjustments for the Light version. Without giving a release date for ListMessenger Light 2.0, I would say it should be out shortly as well.

Thinking about purchasing ListMessenger Pro now but are thinking of waiting? Either way is fine; however, there is always Free Lifetime Upgrades with ListMessenger so have no fears!

Enjoy and good night.

Regards,

KINGSTON, On., Sunday, May 15th, 2005 - I am currently looking for a few people to help me test the upgrade application from previous versions of ListMessenger to this new release. I'm looking for people to test this today if at all possible and you must be running one of the following versions of ListMessenger:

ListMessenger Pro 1.0
ListMessenger 0.9.4
ListMessenger 0.9.3
ListMessenger 0.5.0

Your database must contain over 50 valid subscribers, you must have previously sent over 5 messages using ListMessenger and you must be able to send one newsletter out to your subscriber group today to test with.

I apologize for the requirements; however, I have specific issues I'm looking for and very small mailing lists aren't that useful to me at this time.

Alternatively, if you have a very large mailing list 2,000 + subscribers and you're not able to send out a mailing today, but would like to test the upgrader, that would be great.

Those interested (if anyone) please contact me via e-mail: msimpson at listmessenger dot com

Best Regards,

General Community Update

KINGSTON, On., Friday, April 15th, 2005 - A few things I felt it is important to update everyone one.

New Update: Wednesday, May 4th, 2005
I just got back from a Medical Conference for the past week. I'm home for a few days and then I have to leave again for my cousin's wedding. During this time I've been working on ListMessenger on/off. I've got the new setup engine done and all that remains is the upgrade program, which I am currently working on. Thank-you for your patience.

---

1) The next release of ListMessenger is going along very well. The application itself is now complete and is being tested by a few select individuals. The only thing left to do is to write the new installer / upgrade system so I don't expect this will take much longer. Again, I do not want to set a release date; however, if I were to hinder a guess I would say Sunday, April 24th, 2005 would be a good date. I'll just reiterate that this is not a release date, but just a date that I would expect it to be completed.

2) I have updated ListMessenger Pro 1.0's internal packages and fixed a number of smaller issues that have been causing a higher number of support issues lately. The updates to ListMessenger Pro 1.0 include:

An upgraded PHPMailer class which does not have SMTP problems.

PHP5 readiness by default (renamed $this to $string).

Removal of invalid index.php file in the public images folder.

An update to the Import tool which moves import files from the servers tmp directory to your ListMessenger tmp directory before reading them.

There is no need to upgrade ListMessenger 1.0 if you are not currently experiencing any problems. The issues that were fixed are generally minor and usually effect users immediately. No version number was incremented (i.e. 1.0.2) because in ListMessenger 1.0 if I increment a version number change I had to upgrade the installer and since this was a maintenance release, it just wasn't worth it. In the next release of ListMessenger I have implemented a build numbering system you will always know where your release stands.

3) I will be away this weekend and unable to provide technical support to users. I am leaving Friday at 12:00PM EST and will return Sunday evening. Please feel free to leave messages on the forum and I will address them when I return.

Best Regards,

Listmessenger 1.1 Beta 2 Available

Updated: Saturday, April 9th, 2005
TODO:

Upgrade Program to upgrade / migrate ListMessenger 0.5 - 1.0 (working on)

Documentation (working on: Erik is doing great at this.)

(completed list is at the bottom of the message)

ANNOUNCEMENT:
KINGSTON, On., Monday, February 28th, 2005 – Well after another long stretch of development, I’m pleased to announce that another beta release of ListMessenger Pro 1.1 (Beta 2) is available for download in the Members Area of the ListMessenger website. This beta release is available to anyone who has previously purchased ListMessenger Pro 1.0.

This beta completes the new ListMessenger administration interface and adds a lot of new features to ListMessenger in general. Because of all the new features, this beta release was required to ensure the product is as stable and sound as possible prior to the final release. What this beta does not include is the upgraded end-user tools which allow people to subscribe from your website, and it also does not include an upgrade path from previous versions of ListMessenger. The end-user tools and upgrade system are currently in development and will be included with the final release of ListMessenger.

I would also like to remind you once again, that this is in fact a beta release and I implore you not to use this as your production system. Please do not overwrite your ListMessenger 1.0 installation with this beta release.

I would also like to remind you that all ListMessenger Pro upgrades are available at no cost and upgrade support is also provided via the forum for the final release. On that note, installation support is generally not provided for installing a beta release; however, you are encouraged to express opinions, comments or problems in the forum as well. The forum is available 24 hours a day at: http://forum.listmessenger.com

Finally, I would like to take a moment to sincerely thank all ListMessenger users who are eagerly, but patiently awaiting the final release of this version. It has been one heck of a journey to get this far and this release has been in development for over an entire year.

Also a special thank-you goes out to a forum user and now moderator Erik Geurts, whose dedication and assistance within the ListMessenger community does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated. Thanks Erik.

Sincerely,
Matt Simpson

Listmessenger 1.1 Update 6

For the latest ListMessenger development news, please see the latest Announcement.

KINGSTON, On., Monday, October 4th, 2004 – Despite working a great deal of hours over this weekend, I wasn’t able to get even a beta available for release of the next version of ListMessenger. Since this next version is a complete re-write of the original, the code base has changed which will not allow me to migrate older code. The new sending engine, which was what I worked on all weekend, is pretty much complete and is at least a twenty times improvement over the 1.0 version.
I am working hard to deliver this upgrade, thank-you for your patience.

On a separate note, I'm never going to do such a big upgrade again. There's just too much in getting it ready for production, despite what I think sometimes when I "have a great idea". I'm making it my goal for future releases to be more frequent, but less complex and less features.

Listmessenger 1.1 Update 5

KINGSTON, On., Tuesday, August 28th, 2004 – I thought that I had better put out another release announcement to let everyone know the progress on ListMessenger 1.1.

I have been working diligently on the next release since my return from PHPWorks 2004 (PHP Conference) in Toronto on Sunday. I plan to have no less then a beta version of ListMessenger 1.1 available on the weekend, which will be available to all ListMessenger Pro customers. I will send out a notice to the ListMessenger mailing list when the release is available, as well as post another announcement.

In other news, users should be aware of a possible service outage of the ListMessenger website, members area and forums on Thursday evening and/or Friday morning as we will be upgrading our production server. We do not expect the outage to be long and we appreciate your patience.

Listmessenger 1.1 Update 4

KINGSTON, On., Friday, August 27th, 2004 – With all the e-mails and questions I receive regarding ListMessenger 1.1, I felt it best to just release another announcement explaining the delay and the timelines I expect for this release.

Please be advised that ListMessenger 1.1 is indeed under development and that it is indeed very late. This is not because of programming complexities or any issues relating to the program, but because I simply have not had the time to complete it. I have roughly 15 to 20 hours of programming left to complete it which really isn’t all that much; however, the deadlines that I am under at the University are preventing me from spending that time on ListMessenger. We’ve had two large, top priority projects dumped on our lap last minute and it’s very frustrating for me and unfortunate that it has hindered the development this much.

The number one top priority project was completed on time by September 1st and the second top priority project is required to be completed by September 15th. I am going to spend as much time as possible during the next two weeks on ListMessenger; however, development will be delayed until the end of September. So in other words, you can expect that ListMessenger Pro 1.1 will be released by the end of September, 2004; however, my hope is that it is released sooner than that.

I would also like to take a minute to state that I really sincerely do apologize for the inconveniences and delays of users waiting to upgrade. I completely understand your frustration and I just want you to know that I feel the same way.

The sooner this version is out, the better the following version will be! I always look at it that way, but at the same time, I don’t like to release stuff early.

Best Regards,

KINGSTON, On., Monday, June 28th, 2004 - I'm decided to release some teaser screenshots of ListMessenger 1.1. There's still some development work that needs to be done before I can seed it for beta testing.

Development has slowed due to members of my wedding party that I haven't seen in a long time coming down to visit and I have one more coming this weekend. I also am going to be doing a server upgrade shortly so this will take a bit of my time away from development. I'll be sure to post as soon as I have any further information.

Listmessenger 1.1 Update 2

KINGSTON, On., Thursday, June 24th, 2004 - As much as I was hoping to have this done or at least seeded as a release candidate by Monday, it really doesn't look like that's going to happen now. Some code complications and feature modifications are taking much longer than I ever thought; basically just figuring out how things are going to work with each other properly is what's taking the time.

The way I designed it on paper was flawed, of course, so I want to make sure I get it correct in the code. If absolutly nothing else, I will definitely release some screenshots by the end of the weekend (I want to wait until all the new icons are in place).

Listmessenger 1.1 Update

KINGSTON, On., Sunday, June 14th, 2004 – I felt as though I should post a note to announce the development status of ListMessenger 1.1. I am very happy to say that it is going along quite well and despite some inital delays, development is on course and the release date of June 28th, 2004 is expected to be met. While I expect that it will be ready for June 28th, I will probably initially release it as a Release Candidate and make it available to all current ListMessenger Pro users who wish to participate in the development process. After it's been tested in some larger environments (might take a few days to a week) it will be officially launched to the public.

Thorough testing is underway at the present time; however, I've learned along the way that the best tests are done by the users themselves.

I will also say that ListMessenger is being, for the most part, re-written and there are many enhancements and new features which are going to be included.

Remember, ListMessenger Pro users receive all ListMessenger Pro ugprades at no cost.

More status updates will be posted in this section as they are available. I'll also probably post some screenshots to tease when all major sections are completed.

Listmessenger Pro 1.1 Development Plans

KINGSTON, On., Sunday, April 17th, 2004 – I am pleased to announce the development plans for ListMessenger Pro 1.1 to the public. After careful consideration and input from customers here are the features that will be added for the 1.1 release:

Administrator customizable fields which will affect all groups. This will change in the future to include a group-specific field list; however, the 1.1 release will have the ability to manage custom fields for all groups only.

Option to allow notification of administrator or administrators of new subscriptions. This again, will affect all groups and will not be group specific.

The ability to manage file attachments and send attachments to groups.

The functionality to offset your servers default time zone.

The functionality to modify the default character set of your messages.

The option to allow end-users to select their desired display language in the end-user tools.

The ability to move the “public” folder out of the ListMessenger application directory and place it wherever you wish.

The upgrade of the following internal applications: PHPMailer CVS, HTMLArea 3.0rc2, PCLZip 2.1

The ability to sort by subscription date (added)!

Other possible changes that will be dependant on development time include:

Removal of all MySQL specific code and the inclusion of the ADOdb database abstraction library.

The requirement of PHP’s magic_quotes_gpc removed by adding a function that checks for such occurances.

Along with these additions, there will be interface improvements and all known bugs from current releases will be fixed.

The intended release date of ListMessenger Pro 1.1 will be Monday, June 28th, 2004. Please note that this release date is an intended release date and if the modifications are completed before this date it will be released; however, at the same time if the modifications are not complete, it will not be released.

ListMessenger Light 1.1 will have some new features as well. Including all features listed above accept:

File attachment and management support

Administrator customizable fields

There is no intended release date for ListMessenger Light 1.1, although it should be released around the same time as ListMessenger Pro 1.1, but not before.

We will also be making modifications to our Members Area over the next several months, to include even more useable features besides the current key management and purchasing system. We will be introducing such features as an integrated trouble support ticket system for Pro users, an integrated knowledge base, integration with the forum so that ListMessenger Pro users can be uniquely identified in the forum. We will also be adding Visa, Master Card and possibly more payment methods to the system so that we can extend purchasing services to regions where PayPal currently does not provide account service. PayPal will still be available; this will be an added payment option.

Finally, we plan on really putting some serious effort into further development of our very successful reseller program. Resellers will be encouraged to play a larger role and further integration solutions with their private services is something that we look forward to supporting.

Thank-you for taking the time to read this release announcement, we look forward to powering your mailing list management needs for many sites to come.

KINGSTON, On., Sunday, February 29th, 2004 - This evening from approximately 7:45PM EST until tomorrow morning (Monday, March 1st, 2004) until around 10:30AM EST the ListMessenger Forum as well as the ListMessenger Members Area will be unavailable while we do a server change.

While downtime should be minimal, the backup that we make this evening will be restored to the new server tomorrow morning meaning that any purchases from the Members Area or postings in the forum would be lost. We feel that it's best to remove access to these area's until after our upgrade so as not to create any confusion with potential customers or cause any forum posts to be lost.

While we realize that this upgrade may be of some inconvenience to some users, we feel that it's better for the greater good.

So please post and shop away until 7:45PM EST today, if not, we'll see you tomorrow when we're back online!

Listmessenger Light 1.0 Released

KINGSTON, On., Monday, February 23rd, 2004 - I am pleased to say that after a much delayed release date, ListMessenger Light 1.0.0 (free version) has been released to the public. This version supports updated code and is the first of what will be a long line of Lighter versions of ListMessenger.

The features missing in Light from ListMessenger Pro are:

There is no integrated subscriber history / details.

There is no importing & exporting abilities.

There is no text-based spell checking support.

You cannot modify the speed in which messages send.

Script warns administrator once subscriber list is greater than 200 users.

There are no backup & restore tools.

No access to priority forum support.

No access to trouble ticket support.

No access to members area.

ListMessenger Light is the perfect solution for:

Small personal / commercial / non-profit websites who do not expect a lot of traffic and / or subscribers.

Web-masters / Web-designers who would like to evaluate the product and ensure that it will run on their server prior to purchasing the Pro version.

Users who need a fast, light solution for a temporary project or product.

If it does end up that you do need to upgrade to the Pro version because you have more than 200 subscribers, or you like the product or for any reason, it's as easy as purchasing it, and uploading all the new files to your ListMessenger direcotry. Nothing else needs to be done as both versions use the same database content and structure. This can be done by anyone in a matter for minutes.

If you have any questions / comments, please feel free to post in the forum.
KINGSTON, On., Sunday, December 21st, 2003 - Yes, so today I sent out the first Announcment to everyone that subscribed to the ListMessenger mailing list throught the Members Area; however, I didn't realize my version of ListMessenger was the original release of 1.0 that doesn't work properly and has problems with the headers.

So needless to say, I'm apologizing for this and I have upgraded my own stupid version as of now. It won't happen again.

New Listmessenger Website & Upgrades

A New Face for ListMessenger – A New Forum for Users

KINGSTON, On., Sunday, December 14th, 2003 - After over a year and a half calling http://scripts.digitalorphans.org/listmessenger home, the new ListMessenger website has finally been launched at http://www.listmessenger.com and will continue to expand over the next few months. Content to be added includes manuals and documentation, search functionality, reseller and community information as well as the much anticipated ListMessenger Light 1.0. I feel that the new website is the professional face to a professional product and with enhancements will do us well for the exciting year ahead.

I also took this opportunity to upgrade the forum from InvisionBoard 1.1.2 to InvisionBoard 1.3 and give it a similar look and feel as listmessenger.com.

In either case, there are bound to be a few hiccups somewhere that we haven’t caught during debugging and testing, so if you find something that you feel doesn’t work properly or has errors please send a bug report to: bugreport@listmessenger.com and please include the exact URL, your operating system, web-browser and version as well as any special applications you may have had running at the time the error occurred.

Sincerely,

Listmessenger Pro 1.0 Release Delay

Date: Monday, August 29th, 2003

Much to my dismay, I am posting this thread to inform users that ListMessenger Pro 1.0's release date has been pushed back one week, to Monday, October 6th, 2003.

There are a number of factors that lead to this delay. The major one being that I could not find a suitable e-commerce solution for purchasing software and managing licence keys, so I had to write my own. This solution is what will be required for users to purchase and generate the keys needed to run ListMessenger Pro. I figure that one week extra week will ensure that the released product is of the quality that I, myself, would expect to purchase.

I will post further status details in this thread as I have them:
- Completed: support management system
- Completed: store application design and database
- Completed: store signup process
- Completed: store signin process
- Completed: store shopping cart process
- Completed: store order management process
- Working: store key assignment process
- Working: ListMessenger key integration process
- Working: ListMessenger key tracking process
- Working: ListMessenger update scripts
- Working: ListMessenger setup scripts
- ToDo: final testing and QA
- ToDo: new ListMessenger website

Thank-you,

Listmessenger Pro 1.0 Release Date

Date: Sunday, August 24th, 2003

I am pleased to announce that after nearly one and a half years in development, ListMessenger Pro 1.0 will be available for purchase ($49.95CAD || ~$35.73USD) on Monday, September 29th, 2003. This will be the first commercial version of the application available and will contain many feature enhancements and bug fixes over current private and public development versions.

Prior to September 29th there will be a final development phase release, given to selected ListMessenger users who have made contributions to the project during it's first development cycle. These users will be contacted by myself when I am ready to release, so please do not e-mail me asking to be included in the pre-release testing phase.

Here is a sneak peak of some of ListMessenger newest features, please feel free to discuss any of these on this forum; however, be advised that ListMessenger is currently in a feature freeze and nothing else will be added until after ListMessenger Pro 1.0 is released.

ListMessenger Program:
- Text-Message spell-checking (requires PHP to be compiled --with-pspell)
- HTML-Message Rich Text Editor with image uploading
- Simple user subscribe/unsubscribe history browser
- Administrators "Add Members" contains optional "opt-in" request
- Quick "Save" feature when composing a message
- Queue pruning support for selected message types
- Quickly copy a message from message options window
- View composed message directly from message options window
- Import addresses into ListMessenger (Microsoft Excel / CSV)
- Upgraded PHPMailer class
- Preview HTML Templates
- Advanced licence management
- Searchable/Dumpable subscribe/unsubscribe list
- Opt-out message added to bottom of _all_ text messages
- Opt-out variable added to HTML Template

End-User Tools:
- End-User tools migrated to it's own "public" directory
- End-User tools preferences are now in the Control Panel
- Optional "opt-in" message from End-User tools integrated
- Public archive of previous messages
- Banned e-mail address and banned domains list
- End-User Tools now use customizable language files

There may be more features that I just haven't mentioned as well.

Please be advised that while I will do everything I can to have ListMessenger Light 1.0 ready by September 29th, it is currently 3rd on my priority list. 1) Being getting ListMessenger Pro completed 2) Being complete the new ListMessenger website / store 3) Being to complete ListMessenger Light. Please do not worry, I will try to not let this be a habit as I plan on always releasing the Pro & Light versions at the same time and there _will_ always be a Light version for users to use at no cost.

Sincerely,

Importing / Exporting Features

Date: Tuesday, June 10th, 2003

Despite my better judgement, ListMessenger Pro 1.0 will include the ability to import and export both names and e-mail addresses in CSV and Microsoft Excel formats. This feature will be located in the Control Panel under Import/Exporting.

Important: ListMessenger Light (free version) will not contain this feature at all, nor will I provide support, scripts or instructions as to how to import or export names or e-mail addresses from or to the database.

Important: This is not a selling point to try to get people to purchase the Pro version for $49.95CAD. The reason that I am including this feature is because if an admin decides that they wish to switch from another mailing list manager to ListMessenger, as of right now, they have no way of doing this. This alone would be a huge set back for the program and a huge deturant for new ListMessenger users.

This was an extremely hard decision for me to make, as I fear now more than ever that this feature will make ListMessenger at least some what more appealing to SPAMers; however, I do have and will continue to develope effective features into ListMessenger that attempt this from happening. Abuse of this feature will not be tolerated, there will be no warnings and any one who is caught abusing this will have a big surprise when they try to log into their ListMessenger installation and their key is no longer valid.

Optional Subscription Confirmation

Date: Tuesday, June 10th, 2003

Despite my better judgment, ListMessenger Pro 1.0 will have the option of subscription confirmation on sign-up to accompany the subscription confirmation option upon un-subscribing. The option will be located in the End-User Prefereces within the control panel.

Important: ListMessenger Light (free version) will not contain this feature at all, nor will I provide support, scripts or instructions as to how to remove the subscription confirmation.

Important: This is not a selling point to try to get people to purchase the Pro version for $49.95CAD. The reason that I am including it as an option in the Pro version is because in many cases people have valid reasons for not wanting the confirmation and they have paid money to use the program and receive support. Some valid reasons in my opinion that I have heard are:
1) I use ListMessenger inside of another sign-up script and include it as an opt-in checkbox.
2) I use ListMessenger combined with my on-line store and include it as an opt-in checkbox.
3) I use ListMessenger on my companies Intranet and employees shouldn't have to confirm.
4) etc etc.

So either way, I thought that I would make this announcement so I don't have to answer any more posts, suggestions or feature requests regarding this issue.

Also note, that abuse of this feature will not be tolerated, there will be no warnings and any one who is caught abusing this will have a big surprise when they try to log into their ListMessenger installation and their key is no longer valid.
