The primary focus of the ListMessenger Pro 2.2.1 release is around stability and bug fixing. We have fixed nearly all known bugs discovered in the software over the past few years, and upgrade all major components and libraries within ListMessenger. Interface wise not a lot has changed just yet, although changes and refinements are definitely coming.

The changelog for ListMessenger Pro 2.2.1 is as follows:

ListMessenger now requires PHP 5.1.6 or higher. Please Note: future versions will require PHP 5.3 or higher.
ListMessenger setup now handles the initial config.inc.php creation where possible.
The subscriber import tool now adheres to Control Panel > Preferences > ListMessenger Blacklist.
There is a new "Message Line Ending" option in Control Panel > Preferences > E-Mail Configuration.
Added "E-Mail Address Format" option in Control Panel > Preferences > E-Mail Configuration.
SMTP Authentication is not attempted if it's disabled in Control Panel > Preferences > E-Mail Configuration.
Text and HTML templates now show up on confirmation page during message composition.

We will be using this system to track all confirmed bugs in both ListMessenger Light and Pro, as well as provide solutions to many of these issues in between releases.

The bug tracking system can be accessed by clicking the Bug Tracker link at the top of the forum, then heading into the appropriate project.

We have been using an issue tracker internally for a long time, but this system was never available to the public. Upgraded TinyMCE to version 3.2.1.1.

New option to run TinyMCE in Basic mode, which has limited CSS use for Outlook 2007, or Advanced mode, which creates valid CSS (resolves 4361).
New option to use PHP's mail() function in Basic mode, which does not set the Return-Path or Advanced mode, which does set the Return-Path using the 5th parameter (resolves 4364).
Replaced TabPane library with the jQuery UI Tabs interface (resolves 4347).

Instant Upgrade Instructions
Detailed upgrade instructions are available in the upgrade_2.x.txt file which resides in the "docs" directory of the ListMessenger 2.2 distribution file you download from our website, so please refer to this document for full upgrade instructions. If you would like us to do the upgrade for you, we can do this too. The cost for us to upgrade your existing installation is $20CAD. To schedule your upgrade, please contact sales@listmessenger.com.

Upgrading from a previous ListMessenger 2.x release is simple:

Backup your existing ListMessenger database using PHPMyAdmin or other familiar backup method.
If you are logged into ListMessenger already, make sure you log out or close your web-browser.
Rename your old ListMessenger directory (i.e. "listmessenger_backup").
Upload the new ListMessenger directory to whatever your previous directory was called (i.e. "listmessenger").
Copy your old listmessenger_backup/includes/config.inc.php file to your new listmessenger/includes directory.
Copy your old listmessenger_backup/key.php file to your new listmessenger directory.
Open your web-browser and go to the ListMessenger login page. You should receive a message that says "Congratulations, you have successfully upgraded to ListMessenger 2.2.0."

Have an older release of ListMessenger (i.e 0.5.0, 0.9.3, 0.9.4 or 1.0)? That is not a problem at all, you can upgrade to ListMessenger 2.2 simply by running the setup.php program. All your existing data will remain intact.

ListMessenger 2.2 introduces several new features, and enhances overall long term stability by preparing for the future of PHP (PHP6) and continuing to support legacy PHP (PHP4).

The key highlights for ListMessenger 2.2 include:

New Rich Text Editor
We have had long standing issues with various rich text editors through ListMessenger's history, and we are delighted to announce we have moved to TinyMCE 3.1.0.1 and the MCImageManager plug-in. This rich text editor is incredibly flexible, and supports all major web-browsers including Safari.
Send to Subscriber
The old Send To Address testing message function in the Message Centre has always presented some confusion, so we have re-purposed it into "Send to Subscriber". It is now a find-as-you-type drop down box that allows you to send the specified message to that single subscriber, custom fields and all.
Custom Field Search
An often requested feature was the ability to search for specific data from within custom fields, so here it is! So if you want to see a list of subscribers whose favourite colour is blue, go right ahead and search for it.
Basic Subscriber Statistics
We have brought into the interface some basic statistics on your subscribers. You can now see month-by-month, and day-by-day how many people have subscribed and unsubscribed for your ListMessenger groups.
Forward To A Friend
You asked for it, and you got it. You can now add a [forwardurl] variable to your messages, which will give your subscribers a formatted link that allows them to forward the message they received to one of their friends, with the option of allowing the friend to subscribe to the group as well.
Multi-part Forms
In some circumstances you may want to collect additional information from your subscribers, but you don't want to take up extra screen real estate to do it. With ListMessenger 2.2, you can have your subscribers fill out this additional information on "page 2" of the form.
Interface Improvements
Lets face it ListMessenger has never been an ugly duckling, but we can always find ways to make it look even better. This release has some nice touches, you'll see.

Generally speaking I aim to put out 1 or 2 releases per year; however, it has been nearly 13 months since the 2.1 release. Just to be clear, ListMessenger is still being developed and activity has been slow but steady. This past year has been great, we have thousands of new users and have received a lot of fantastic constructive criticism that helps drive new development and has helped make ListMessenger what it is today.

There are actually two versions of ListMessenger currently in development:

ListMessenger 2.2
This release will be out shortly and consists of many updates, bug fixes, and some new and enhanced features such as:

New default rich text editor (TinyMCE 3.0.5 with MCImageManager plugin).
New ability to search for data in your custom fields.
New advanced SMTP connections (including SSL connection and port specifications).
New automated "Send To Friend" link and form support.
Repurposed the "Send To Address" feature in the Message Centre to "Send To Subscriber" so that you are able to send the message to single existing subscriber (a la find-as-you-type).
New template variable added to the End-user Tools for multiple template support.
New ability to use custom field data in Admin notification e-mails.
Plus a few other tricks.

There is no specific release date for ListMessenger 2.2; however, it will be out sooner rather than later. Development is nearly complete, then testing and Q/A will follow. ListMessenger 2.2 will be the last release in the 2.x branch and will also be the last release of ListMessenger to support PHP4.

ListMessenger 3.0
Planning and initial development work of ListMessenger 3.0 has already began, and I am excited to be able to devote more time to this release once 2.2 is out-the-door. ListMessenger 3.0 is a complete rewrite of the code base, and currently utilizes Zend Framework 1.5. I do not want to divulge too much information on it at this time, but I am truly hoping to make it available by the end of the year.

The upgrade process from previous 2.x releases to 2.1 is easy to do, please review the instructions in the docs directory of the distribution file. If you are upgrading from previous versions of ListMessenger, do not worry, you are not left out; the setup application can upgrade right from ListMessenger 0.5.0 to 2.1.0.

Future Changes:
The ListMessenger 2.x code base is now fairly mature and we need room to grow! So with that we will soon be starting development on ListMessenger 3.0. If you have any last pieces of feedback or suggestions for the 3.0 release, please post them in the Suggestions & Feedback section as I this will be reviewed while we develop our Roadmap to 3.0.

The other exciting piece of news is that listmessenger.com will soon be getting a facelift! Our current website and members area has served us quite well, but it's starting to age. The new site design (currently in development) will bring us up to Web 2.0 standards and the new purchasing system will allow for more flexibility including add-on purchases and alternate payment methods.

Alternatively, if you have a very large mailing list 2,000 + subscribers and you're not able to send out a mailing today, but would like to test the upgrader, that would be great.

I just got back from a Medical Conference for the past week. I'm home for a few days and then I have to leave again for my cousin's wedding. During this time I've been working on ListMessenger on/off. I've got the new setup engine done and all that remains is the upgrade program, which I am currently working on. Thank-you for your patience.

1) The next release of ListMessenger is going along very well. The application itself is now complete and is being tested by a few select individuals. The only thing left to do is to write the new installer / upgrade system so I don't expect this will take much longer. Again, I do not want to set a release date; however, if I were to hinder a guess I would say Sunday, April 24th, 2005 would be a good date. I'll just reiterate that this is not a release date, but just a date that I would expect it to be completed.

2) I have updated ListMessenger Pro 1.0's internal packages and fixed a number of smaller issues that have been causing a higher number of support issues lately. The updates to ListMessenger Pro 1.0 include:

An upgraded PHPMailer class which does not have SMTP problems.
PHP5 readiness by default (renamed $this to $string).
Removal of invalid index.php file in the public images folder.
An update to the Import tool which moves import files from the servers tmp directory to your ListMessenger tmp directory before reading them.

There is no need to upgrade ListMessenger 1.0 if you are not currently experiencing any problems. The issues that were fixed are generally minor and usually effect users immediately. No version number was incremented (i.e. 1.0.2) because in ListMessenger 1.0 if I increment a version number change I had to upgrade the installer and since this was a maintenance release, it just wasn't worth it. In the next release of ListMessenger I have implemented a build numbering system you will always know where your release stands.

3) I will be away this weekend and unable to provide technical support to users. I am leaving Friday at 12:00PM EST and will return Sunday evening. Please feel free to leave messages on the forum and I will address them when I return.

KINGSTON, On., Monday, February 28th, 2005 – Well after another long stretch of development, I’m pleased to announce that another beta release of ListMessenger Pro 1.1 (Beta 2) is available for download in the Members Area of the ListMessenger website. This beta release is available to anyone who has previously purchased ListMessenger Pro 1.0.

This beta completes the new ListMessenger administration interface and adds a lot of new features to ListMessenger in general. Because of all the new features, this beta release was required to ensure the product is as stable and sound as possible prior to the final release. What this beta does not include is the upgraded end-user tools which allow people to subscribe from your website, and it also does not include an upgrade path from previous versions of ListMessenger. The end-user tools and upgrade system are currently in development and will be included with the final release of ListMessenger.

I would also like to remind you once again, that this is in fact a beta release and I implore you not to use this as your production system. Please do not overwrite your ListMessenger 1.0 installation with this beta release.

I would also like to remind you that all ListMessenger Pro upgrades are available at no cost and upgrade support is also provided via the forum for the final release. On that note, installation support is generally not provided for installing a beta release; however, you are encouraged to express opinions, comments or problems in the forum as well. KINGSTON, On., Monday, October 4th, 2004 – Despite working a great deal of hours over this weekend, I wasn’t able to get even a beta available for release of the next version of ListMessenger. Since this next version is a complete re-write of the original, the code base has changed which will not allow me to migrate older code. The new sending engine, which was what I worked on all weekend, is pretty much complete and is at least a twenty times improvement over the 1.0 version.
I am working hard to deliver this upgrade, thank-you for your patience.

On a separate note, I'm never going to do such a big upgrade again. There's just too much in getting it ready for production, despite what I think sometimes when I "have a great idea". I'm making it my goal for future releases to be more frequent, but less complex and less features.

Please be advised that ListMessenger 1.1 is indeed under development and that it is indeed very late. This is not because of programming complexities or any issues relating to the program, but because I simply have not had the time to complete it. I have roughly 15 to 20 hours of programming left to complete it which really isn’t all that much; however, the deadlines that I am under at the University are preventing me from spending that time on ListMessenger. We’ve had two large, top priority projects dumped on our lap last minute and it’s very frustrating for me and unfortunate that it has hindered the development this much.

The number one top priority project was completed on time by September 1st and the second top priority project is required to be completed by September 15th. I am going to spend as much time as possible during the next two weeks on ListMessenger; however, development will be delayed until the end of September. So in other words, you can expect that ListMessenger Pro 1.1 will be released by the end of September, 2004; however, my hope is that it is released sooner than that.

I would also like to take a minute to state that I really sincerely do apologize for the inconveniences and delays of users waiting to upgrade. I completely understand your frustration and I just want you to know that I feel the same way.

The sooner this version is out, the better the following version will be! I always look at it that way, but at the same time, I don’t like to release stuff early.

I will also say that ListMessenger is being, for the most part, re-written and there are many enhancements and new features which are going to be included.

The ability to sort by subscription date (added)!

Other possible changes that will be dependant on development time include:

Removal of all MySQL specific code and the inclusion of the ADOdb database abstraction library.
The requirement of PHP’s magic_quotes_gpc removed by adding a function that checks for such occurances.

Along with these additions, there will be interface improvements and all known bugs from current releases will be fixed.

The intended release date of ListMessenger Pro 1.1 will be Monday, June 28th, 2004. Please note that this release date is an intended release date and if the modifications are completed before this date it will be released; however, at the same time if the modifications are not complete, it will not be released.

ListMessenger Light 1.1 will have some new features as well. Including all features listed above accept:

File attachment and management support
Administrator customizable fields

There is no intended release date for ListMessenger Light 1.1, although it should be released around the same time as ListMessenger Pro 1.1, but not before.

We will also be making modifications to our Members Area over the next several months, to include even more useable features besides the current key management and purchasing system. We will be introducing such features as an integrated trouble support ticket system for Pro users, an integrated knowledge base, integration with the forum so that ListMessenger Pro users can be uniquely identified in the forum. We will also be adding Visa, Master Card and possibly more payment methods to the system so that we can extend purchasing services to regions where PayPal currently does not provide account service. PayPal will still be available; this will be an added payment option.

Finally, we plan on really putting some serious effort into further development of our very successful reseller program. Resellers will be encouraged to play a larger role and further integration solutions with their private services is something that we look forward to supporting.

While downtime should be minimal, the backup that we make this evening will be restored to the new server tomorrow morning meaning that any purchases from the Members Area or postings in the forum would be lost. We feel that it's best to remove access to these area's until after our upgrade so as not to create any confusion with potential customers or cause any forum posts to be lost.

While we realize that this upgrade may be of some inconvenience to some users, we feel that it's better for the greater good.

So please post and shop away until 7:45PM EST today, if not, we'll see you tomorrow when we're back online!

There is no importing & exporting abilities.
There is no text-based spell checking support.
You cannot modify the speed in which messages send.
Script warns administrator once subscriber list is greater than 200 users.
There are no backup & restore tools.
No access to priority forum support.
No access to trouble ticket support.
No access to members area.

ListMessenger Light is the perfect solution for:

Small personal / commercial / non-profit websites who do not expect a lot of traffic and / or subscribers.
Web-masters / Web-designers who would like to evaluate the product and ensure that it will run on their server prior to purchasing the Pro version.
Users who need a fast, light solution for a temporary project or product.

If it does end up that you do need to upgrade to the Pro version because you have more than 200 subscribers, or you like the product or for any reason, it's as easy as purchasing it, and uploading all the new files to your ListMessenger direcotry. Nothing else needs to be done as both versions use the same database content and structure. This can be done by anyone in a matter for minutes.

Much to my dismay, I am posting this thread to inform users that ListMessenger Pro 1.0's release date has been pushed back one week, to Monday, October 6th, 2003.

There are a number of factors that lead to this delay. The major one being that I could not find a suitable e-commerce solution for purchasing software and managing licence keys, so I had to write my own. This solution is what will be required for users to purchase and generate the keys needed to run ListMessenger Pro. I figure that one week extra week will ensure that the released product is of the quality that I, myself, would expect to purchase.

I will post further status details in this thread as I have them:

I am pleased to announce that after nearly one and a half years in development, ListMessenger Pro 1.0 will be available for purchase ($49.95CAD || ~$35.73USD) on Monday, September 29th, 2003. This will be the first commercial version of the application available and will contain many feature enhancements and bug fixes over current private and public development versions.

Prior to September 29th there will be a final development phase release, given to selected ListMessenger users who have made contributions to the project during it's first development cycle. These users will be contacted by myself when I am ready to release, so please do not e-mail me asking to be included in the pre-release testing phase.

Here is a sneak peak of some of ListMessenger newest features, please feel free to discuss any of these on this forum; however, be advised that ListMessenger is currently in a feature freeze and nothing else will be added until after ListMessenger Pro 1.0 is released.

Despite my better judgement, ListMessenger Pro 1.0 will include the ability to import and export both names and e-mail addresses in CSV and Microsoft Excel formats. This feature will be located in the Control Panel under Import/Exporting.

Important: ListMessenger Light (free version) will not contain this feature at all, nor will I provide support, scripts or instructions as to how to import or export names or e-mail addresses from or to the database.

Important: This is not a selling point to try to get people to purchase the Pro version for $49.95CAD. The reason that I am including this feature is because if an admin decides that they wish to switch from another mailing list manager to ListMessenger, as of right now, they have no way of doing this. This alone would be a huge set back for the program and a huge deturant for new ListMessenger users.

This was an extremely hard decision for me to make, as I fear now more than ever that this feature will make ListMessenger at least some what more appealing to SPAMers; however, I do have and will continue to develope effective features into ListMessenger that attempt this from happening. Abuse of this feature will not be tolerated, there will be no warnings and any one who is caught abusing this will have a big surprise when they try to log into their ListMessenger installation and their key is no longer valid.

Despite my better judgment, ListMessenger Pro 1.0 will have the option of subscription confirmation on sign-up to accompany the subscription confirmation option upon un-subscribing. The option will be located in the End-User Prefereces within the control panel.

Important: ListMessenger Light (free version) will not contain this feature at all, nor will I provide support, scripts or instructions as to how to remove the subscription confirmation.

Important: This is not a selling point to try to get people to purchase the Pro version for $49.95CAD. The reason that I am including it as an option in the Pro version is because in many cases people have valid reasons for not wanting the confirmation and they have paid money to use the program and receive support. Some valid reasons in my opinion that I have heard are:
1) I use ListMessenger inside of another sign-up script and include it as an opt-in checkbox.
2) I use ListMessenger combined with my on-line store and include it as an opt-in checkbox.
3) I use ListMessenger on my companies Intranet and employees shouldn't have to confirm.
4) etc etc.

So either way, I thought that I would make this announcement so I don't have to answer any more posts, suggestions or feature requests regarding this issue.
